Can surfing can benefit both our planet and ourselves?

Many are aware of the health benefits that surfing has to give, spending time in the water has long been recommended as a way to engage with nature and what better way than to do this by combining it with a sport.

However recently there has been studies indicating that surfers not only contribute to the local economy of where the surf breaks lie but also protect these ecosystems by opposing development from other industries (tourism, oil, over fishing). Seems like a new era of “Surfconomics” has arrived and this could help the environment in many ways.

Questions on this topic remain, will governments take surfing organisations seriously when it comes to protesting a reef and a surf break? Could local communities benefit more from larger organisations investing in them rather than surfers? Does marine life really benefit from surfers?
